Barbie Wednesday

Anyone remember Twiggy? She was a famous British model from the sixties and the first real person to have a Mattel doll made after her.

In late 1967 Mattel came out with the Twiggy Doll. She is the same size as a Francie or a Casey doll 11 1/4 and could share their wardrobe but Mattel did create four exclusive outfits for the Twiggy doll in 1968.
Last week at a local antique shop I found a Twiggy doll in a ziploc bag for $6.99! She was clothed and even included another outfit !
The outfit from the set is called "Twiggy Turnouts". A sleeveless metallic skirted mini dress is what I got from the set.

Twiggy has the same head mold as a Casey doll just with heavier makeup.

When trying to identify the other outfit that Twiggy came with, I discovered it was actually Talking Julia's jumpsuit. This doll is based on the television show "Julia", played by black African American actress Diahann Carroll.

So here she is in her sparkly outfit! She was definitely a cute find and great addition to my collection!

Thanks for visiting me today!
Lindsey

I had forgotten about the Twiggy doll. When she was first introduced, I was surprised at her opened-mouth grin, as Twiggy didn't really do that all that often. But Mattel was wise in putting a smile on her face: her young idolizers liked knowing she actually did have one tucked away for them! By the way, I SIMPLY LOVE YOUR NEW LOOK! Ms. Hurst (Did I remember that name right?) designed a presentation that fits you like the perfect glove! And CONGRATULATIONS to Miss MaryEllen for winning the deligtful giveaway and thank YOU, again and again, for hosting the wonderful Wizard of Oz spectacular!

I do remember Twiggy very well. When I was nine years old(1968)my mom took me to the Beauty shop and I got a twiggy haircut. Of course,I was short and a little on the chubby side but,I thought I was so cool and groovy(smile)....
Thanks for sharing this doll. I remember the doll and wanted one but never got one....
Your post brought back some memories for me...

Do I remember Twiggy! you must be kidding me!! I was a little girl, and I wanted my hair cut to look just like hers! I did have the blonde hair and big eyes, but that was about it. Great post!

I HAD the Twiggy doll when I was a kid, but sadly, I don't know what ever happened to her. She could still very well be tucked somewhere in my parents' house, and I won't see it until YEARS from now. I can be patient, and wait for her to turn up, but I just hope one of the dogs doesn't find her first, and think she's a chew toy! I do, however have a Julia doll, but I don't have the original nurse's uniform on her. My sister had the Julia you show on your photo! Wish my parents had taught me to take better care of things back then, but thanks for the memories!... Now, is Barbie Wednesday something YOU are starting, or that someone else hosts?? First time I've seen this!

The picture of the real Twiggy looks so gaunt and hollow-eyed...she was probably anorexic.

I'm really into the '60's right now after three episodes of Mad Men...LOL!

Lucky find! I'm looking for a Tammy doll myself!

Indeed, I do recall Twiggy... I think my sister had nearly every magazine that Twiggy appeared in! And how fun to see a Julia doll... my Mom 'n I loved watching that TV show together... Thanks for sparking some pleasant memories for me, Lindsey...

Lindsey! The header is so perfectly the two of you! Love it beyond words! Twiggy's dresses were called Poor Boy dresses. I had two and wore them with white go go boots! Great memories! E

Hi Twyla and Lindsey:
Thanks for the stroll down Memory Lane! Sister Goldenhair and I shared many, many Barbie/Ken/Midge/Skipper/Tutti and Todd and others when we were kids, but we never had the Twiggy Doll. (How did we miss her?)lol

Many, many hours spent playing with our like-minded cousins or with each other in our own yard or house. So much fun from dolls!

Thanks also for stopping by to visit me from time to time. I read all your messages and really enjoy them!
Blessings,
Donna

I remember Twiggy and Julia very well. Loved them both as a young girl. These dolls don't look anything like either of them, but cute find anyway.
And I love the new banner.

Oh yeah, Twiggy! Very groovy! I just put a Carnaby Street photo in "retro rotation" on my blog sidebar yesterday so I'm in kind of a swinging London mood and digging this.

Oh my gosh yes! I sure do remember Twiggy, I love her. Leslie Hornsby, I think is her real name??? I remember because I had just become a teen and I devoured every fashion magazine there was at that age. I wanted to be a fashion designer.

You might enjoy a movie she's in Lindsey, "The Boyfriend" (remake of the old musical play) - don't know if it's come out on DVD or not, but she's charming in it, if it's available.

We all dressed like her and my best friend did her eye makeup like Twiggy wore hers (tons of black eyeliner and lashes painted on) - and my girlfriend was sent home for the day because of it.

We also couldn't wear our skirts shorter than above the knee back then (I'm prehistoric), and we'd try to hide from the Girl's VP at recess and lunch. So funny now!

Thanks so much for all the fun memories!

I can't help laughing at this memory tonight. Yes, I remember Twiggy too and I had her for a short time but I think the neighbor girl stole her, so my dad named our DONKEY TWIGGY at the Fairyland. I may be able to find a picture of MY TWIGGY for you...oh goodness, I have not thought of that in ages!

I have the Julia doll! My dad wouldn't let me have her because she was black, (insert eyeroll). But my Aunt Clara got her for me. The strange thing is that over the years her hair has turned orange! I love the jumpsuit, I'm sure mine was lost years ago.

Blessings
