There's no place like home. It was rainy in the Ozarks for the past two days and taking pictures that I normally like to show you didn't happen. We have been to flea markets and antique stores and have a few things to share with you, but for now we will keep you in suspense.
One of the highlights of my childhood was watching the Wizard of Oz which came on only once a year. It was something I literally looked forward to all year long. I remember one time when I was pretty little I was out running in the yard and tripped over a stump. It knocked the wind out of me and scared me to death. I was crying and my mother, trying to comfort me, told me the Wizard of Oz was on that night. Well, that did the trick, I stopped crying and was happy again.
Somerset Life magazine is taking submissions of Wizard of Oz type works of art until Sept. 25th. The timing is just perfect for you to create your works to share on your blog on Aug. 22nd and then submit to this wonderful inspirational magazine. What an honor it would be to be published in this fine magazine! A few of our blog friends have already had this honor.
The 70th anniversary of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is worthy of a grand gala to celebrate one of the greatest movies of our times. Let's make it special!
We are super excited about the Wizard of Oz Gala that we are hosting on the 22nd of August. We are thrilled with our dear friends who are participating and look so forward to seeing all the beautiful creations and fun that people will come up with. There is still plenty of time to join and we'd love it if you would leave us a comment or email telling us that you are joining and then feel free to put the button on your side bar. Some of your friends may want to join too!

My kids and my best friend threw me a birthday party to remember a couple of years ago when they chose the theme of Wizard of Oz. There weren't any decorations at the Party Store so they had to make their own and look on ebay for things to make my birthday special. They did a wonderful job. My son made the emerald city complete with glitter and hung on the wall. There was even a yellow brick road and a field of poppies. When I came into the room, hands held over my eyes, they started playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow and I opened my eyes! It was a magical moment that I will never forget. It brought tears to my eyes.

To quote one of my favorite lines from the movie: "I have a witch mad at me and you could get into trouble!"
We're off to see the Wizard!
Have a happy and inspired week! Twyla

Twyla,
ReplyDeleteThe power of those childhood memories! I, too, remember the big deal my mother would make when the Wizard of Oz was going to be on. Even today when I stumble across it on TV - you simply must watch! It takes you back to a place you want to be! It was a true family affair! There's just something wonderful about good triumphing over evil! Have no clue what I will be doing, but count me in!
As always Twyla, a big Thank You for all of your kind words and encouragement! I love when you post on my blog as it always inspires me!
Have an Emerald City inspired week!
Big Hugs,
Cindy
oh, this brings back such magical memories of my childhood too!

Hi girls!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your visit and really kind compliments!
I have to say your blog is so, so sweet! There's so much to see...and when I was little I had a series of cards that were illustrated just like the little girl you have in your sideboard. I also love The Wizard of Oz. I really enjoyed peeking in, and I'll come back to visit often! So nice to meet you!
Big Smiles, Paulette :o)
I love The Wizard of Oz as a child, too. Those pictures you posted brought back wonderful memories. I haven't seen it in years.
ReplyDeleteYour Wizard of Oz birthday party sounds fantastic. That must have been so emotional when they played Over the Rainbow and then let you see what was happening. I can just imagine it.
Hi Twyla
ReplyDeleteI look forward to stopping by on the 22nd August to see your Wizard of Oz Gala. It sounds great fun.

There was -- and still is -- something so magical about this movie! I too, was overly excited when I knew it was coming on TV. And now our daughter is enthralled with the whole Wizard of Oz and has started collecting mementos too!

Yayyy! I can't wait to get started on the Wizard of Oz project!
ReplyDeleteI've already added the "W of O" button to my blog. I can't wait to see what everyone makes!
Like most every one, I loved the movie too. I have a few collectable items including large ceramic banks, The 50th Anniversary book, A plate that plays music, and lots of other things I've been given through the years. I also have the distinct pleasure of having had a grandfather that strongly resembled Burt Lahr.. lol!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea with me!
enjoy the rest of your week.
I remember that, too! I LOVED watching The Wizard of Oz when it would come on TV for it's annual showing! Every year it was a big deal to watch it and the whole family would gather to watch it together. I think movies on TV were more special back then because you got ONE shot at it, LOL!
ReplyDeleteWell here I am again.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm going backwards to read your posts. I love the Wizard of Oz post. The pictures are great! I'm a real visual person so I'm the girl that always looked for a book with lots of pics...lol (Loved National Geographic) not to say I don't read, but I love vintage pictures.
Thanks so much for dropping by and reading my work. It's so awesome to meet new people and get inspired by their work. Thanks for adding me.
Shannon
Hi Twyla!
ReplyDeleteThe Wizard of OZ is a classic that is right up there with The Sound of Music :) Wish I could join your OZ party, but will look forward to your next party!
Have fun!
Cathy
Gosh, I didn't see the Somerset thing, I need to get on that. Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I found you (I think it was when Lemondrop Vintage left a comment on my blog and I popped over to her and then saw you two "crazy crafters"! heehee).
Anyway, HOW FUN! The Wizard of Oz was always been my favorite movie when I was growing up and still holds a special place in my heart....and August 22 is my birthday, so I'm doubly blown away to find this post! You two are adorable and I'm looking forward to exploring your blog some more!
: )
