Hello friends!
As I've mentioned, my New Year's
resolution was to read more.
I used to love reading, but over the years
lost the time it takes to devote to reading.
I have a couple of stacks waiting for me to get through
them. I am a slow reader. I suppose I could pick up
my speed, but I really love to languish over each sentence
and listen to how the writer expresses themselves.
I don't have a Kindle or a Nook. I love books!
I like to turn the pages and have a book to slip
back in the bookcase to remember when I'm done.
Since I haven't read for awhile, I would love
your input as to what books you have read and
would recommend that I read. Just tell me in the
comment section. I would really love to know
what books you all like!
I like inspirational, self help, biographies,
history, as well as fiction.
I am keeping a notebook to write down each book
I read this year and how it made me feel and favorite
quotes from it.
I love home libraries and thought it would be fun to
share some of my favorite ones I've seen on
Pinterest.
Thanks for sharing part of your day with me.
Have a wonderful week!
Love, Twyla
Have a wonderful week!
Love, Twyla
Well Twyla I have been a reader all my life. I run a book club and also write down all the books I read then average out at the end of the year. 2011 I read 56 books. making it about 1 a week. Some take longer of course and some are shorter. I don't like inspirational types, history, self help, or biographies which you mentioned. My favorites are mainly fiction I would say.
ReplyDeleteLook up Alexander McCall Smith's #1 Ladies Detective Agency series they are wonderful. I love M.C. Beaton's Hamish Macbeth Series of mysteries of Scotland, very comical. Night Circus a very magical book, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, I like the author Henning Mankell who writes the Wallander series. Looks like I lean toward mysteries these days. A really good non fiction I read is by Kira Salak called Four Corners our book club loved it and I'm getting another book by her. I just finished East of Eden it was wonderful and if you have never read it you should. Nan
I love books also! I just like to have one in my hand - I don't ever want a Nook or Kindle. Since you have one by Sue Monk Kidd, I think you would also like her book the Secret Life of Bees. M C Beaton also writes the Agatha Raisin mysteries - I love her & Hamish Macbeth. I loved The Help. You might enjoy 2 older novels by Betty Smith - Joy in the Morning & A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I loved Frank McCourt's book, Angela's Ashes & anything that Frank wrote. One of my faves is William Manchester's The Death of a President, about JFK. Twyla, I could go on all day about books! Hope you get lots of ideas. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading too but only read at night when i go to bed. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love to read. I recently realized that blogging is keeping me from reading like I used to do, so I'm planning to remedy that. My problem is when I start a book, I won't put it down until it's finished. I like books about espionage and mystery. Clive Cussler is a favorite author and James Patterson. No Kindle for me either - I want to hold a book.
ReplyDeleteI love to read and always have at least one book by my side if not two or three. :)
ReplyDeleteMy latest favorite books have been the Tales From Grace Chapel Inn series (Guideposts). There are around 25 of these books and they're written by several different authors. Our bookmobile has almost all of them.
Here's a blurb from Christianbook.com:
"Once readers visit the charming village of Acorn Hill, they’ll never want to leave. Three sisters, Louise, a widow from Philadelphia; Alice, an unmarried nurse who lived with her father; and Jane, a divorced chef from San Francisco, reunite in the sleepy town after their father’s death and turn the family home into a charming bed-and-breakfast. Here the sisters rekindle old memories, rediscover their childhood bonds, revel in the blessings of friendship, and meet fascinating guests along the way."
Reading these books are a nice calming way to wind-down after a busy day.
I love books too and just read a lot of Mary Kay Andrews' books! They were really fun! I would put Mermaid chair at the bottom of that stack! It wasn't one of my favorites! heehee! ♥
ReplyDeleteI love reading...it has become one of my most favorite things to do...I do most all my reading at night after I lay down. I adore reading Amish stories,Beverly Lewis being my favorite author. I also like to read classics as well...My favorite being Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
ReplyDeleteI have not kept a record of the books I have read in the past few years but, certainly wish I had. I plan on trying to do so this year. I think you would love reading Jane Eyre. I like Jane Austen's stories as well but, haven't read one yet...I plan to read Sense and Sense ability this year some time.I,like you...want a real book in my hand not a nook, etc. My daughter Regina has a nook and loves it...to each is own :)
Enjoy your books....blessings
I just wanted to add that I too, like Sherry have read some of the Grace Chapel Inn series...I recommend them as well.
ReplyDeleteHello, Twyla!
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading The Help. It made me laugh and cry outloud. It is now among my favorites that I will read again and again.
Love to read? Need and invitation to the classics? Consider yourself invited. I recommend classic literature - 19th century authors are my favorites! Be ye warned - you will begin to speak like them! Oh! The glory of a 30 word perfectly constructed sentence brimming with wit and imagery - Dickens was master of this! Jane Austen is an absolute must! George Eliot - Middlemarch was brilliant! C.S. Lewis - read the Narnia series - not just for kids! Neither is Mary Norton's "Borrowers" series - a joyful read as a child, young adulot, and in the mature years! TOlkein's Lord of the Rings - deep waters, there . . . and for light cozy reading, Susan Wittig Albert just released the last of her 8 book series of Cottage Tales in September - loosely based on the real life of Beatrix Potter from 1906-1913 when she was purchasing her farms in the English Lake District - and begin courted by her husband, Will Heelis.
ReplyDeleteSorry - am I going on too much? Could continue if you let me. Folks actually pay me for this good advice - bless you my Blog friend - you get it for free! Keep us up to date on what you're reading!
Joy!
Kathy
I am right with you...I used to read more but for whatever reason just don't so much anymore. It looks like you got some great suggestions. I think I'll start my own list. :)
ReplyDeleteI love reading so much and I agree with you books are wonderful, but I absolutely love my kindel. I love that I can download a book where ever I am and alway have one on the go. I also go through a book in about 2 to 3 days and if I buy new books that are so expensive I am always at a loss as what to do with them after I have finished them. Where I live there is no library either so my kindle is my life saver. I also listen to Audio books on my ipod especially when doing a project I listen while I work - love it!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nan, the no. 1 Lady Detective series is wonderful!
I love reading too, but since books were taking over my house and I couldn't get rid of them, I did buy a Kindle. I absolutely love it and it is in my purse at all times when I'm not reading. I read all of the time so this is good for me. I can have a book with me on hand when I finish one. For light reading, I love the Flavia De Luce mysteries by Alan Bradley. They are set in the English country side around the 1950's and star a 10 year old who loves to solve crimes. I also just finished "The Glass Castle" by Janette Walls. It's quite a different story of a real family. Entertaining, sad, unreal. I loved it. "How High the Moon' by Sandra Kring. I love all of her books. "Sarah's Key" was intense but very good. I am now reading the Biography of Steve Jobs. Apple products are very much a part of my life and thought I would learn about the man behind them. Also Julia Child's "My Life in France" is a fun read. If you liked the recent movie about her you will love this book. I'm a Francophile and really enjoyed this book a lot. Have fun picking something to read. You have some great recommendations.
ReplyDeleteI love this blog-- all the friendly sharing and fun topics and great craft ideas. Thanks for all the goodies Twyla and Lindsey.
ReplyDeleteNow Books-- I LOVE them and always have one at the breakfast table and read several times a day . My sons kept asking me if I would like a Kindle for Christmas but I told them I really like to hold my books. I am always drawn to the book section at garage sales or any place you find them. I have so many that I can't part with. I don't care for biographies, history ( unless it is WWII Air Force history), detective, or anything that is too deep. I want to read for pure enjoyment and read a lot of the chick books ( pocket novels that my sis-in -law keeps me supplied with. I do collect some of the older books and think anyone would love Gene Stratton Porter books. I have several of them and have read most at least 3 times and my favorites at least 5 times. They are wonderful. I like many authors. I love the picture of the one bedroom with all the old pictures and book shelves all around-- the one with the horse picture.
Hello, Twyla! I just finished reading The Help. It made me laugh and cry outloud. It is now among my favorites that I will read again and again.
