Hello friends!
Today I am sharing a tutorial for an altered chalkboard!
I purchased this 9 inch round chalkboard at Michaels last week to alter
and thought I would share the process with you!
The paper for this project is October Afternoon's new Rocket Age line.
I never ever buy boy line papers. I want frilly and girly, but I saw this line and fell in love.
The colors are so bright and the patterns are so vintage and cute!
I started by taking this solar system pattern and cutting out a 9 inch circle.
I then cut it again in the middle, creating a 1 1/2 inch border.
I also cut out a variety of stars and moons to work with. I cut these from the Create A Critter cartridge on my Cricut but you could freehand or print off stars to use for this.
I then inked a few of the stars in a light yellow ink.
I used Colorbox Lemonade Chalk Cat's Eye ink
I took my chalkboard and removed the twine hanger
to glue down the paper and threaded it back through.
I also grabbed a few pieces of chipboard to cut,
so that I could add layers and dimension to my project.
I then cut out several circles using punches in sizes 2 1/8, 1, 1/2 inch.
I only used 1 sheet of double sided paper for this,
so that I only had two different patterns to work with.
That way, as I layered, if I had too much of one color,
I could flip it over and use the other side!
Now, ink the edges using a brown ink.
I used Vintage Photo Distress Ink.
Now to the fun part!
Start layering the circles around the board.
No gluing yet, just start setting them down to figure out your pattern.
I decided to have 3 groupings of circles, as the magic number to any grouping is 3!
Always good to remember no matter what your working on.
Now as you start to glue down your circles, add a square of chipboard, cardboard, or foam squares under some of them before gluing so that they are not all at the same level.
Now it's time to start adding stickers!
These stickers are also from October Afternoon's Rocket Age line.
Now you can arrange the stickers over your circles, but try not to cover them too much.
I decided that I wanted the circles to stand out more, so I took white and black gel pens and added stitch lines around the edges.
After I finished adding all my layers, I took a few star shaped stick pins from Maya Road and just pushed them in, underneath the paper.
The Explore and rocket chipboard pieces are from an old Daisy D's stock that I had laying around but October Afternoon's line had more than enough extra goodies I could have added.
Now all you need is some chalk!
This would be the perfect project to make for your kids,
to hang on their door, practice writing their name with chalk, doodling or as a gift.
If you like this chalkboard but don't want to make your own,
you can find this one here in our etsy shop.
This Friday is our Patriotic ATC Blog Hop,
you can read here for more info and we hope that you come back and join us!
Wishing you a day of joy, Lindsey
Your altered chalkboard is a great gift for that birthday child. Add some bright colors of chalk and let the artist draw. Happy altering...
ReplyDeleteYour altered chalkboard is adorable! Thanks for posting the tutorial - I have wanted to create some chalkboards of my own, but wasn't sure how to do it. Gonna give this a try!
