Hello friends, Today I thought I would share a little history about Barbie's little Sister, Skipper.
Skipper was created in 1964. Originaly she was available in three different hair colors, blonde, brunette and red. While Barbie was 11.5 inches tall, Skipper was only 9.25 inches tall and gradually over the years has become to be almost the same height as Barbie.
After many requests in the early sixties from customers for Barbie to have children, Mattel came up with the solution to create Skipper so that Barbie could baby sit without being too domestic. She was also a great alternative for parents that wanted a more conservitive doll for their children.
As like Barbie, Skipper's last name is Roberts. She lived in Willow, Wisconsion, and attended Baker Elementary School and was the most popular girl in school!
Skipper has had many friends over the years but her first were Scooter and Ricky which were introduced in 1965.
Skipper dolls are still being produced by Mattel, the latest one being Camping Family Skipper doll released in 2009.
Wishing you a lovely day, Lindsey
Just when I think I have been everywhere in cyberland I find a new place!
ReplyDeleteI loved Barbie, owned two skippers and you made me want to find the box again.

I wish I had an old fashioned Skipper - the new one looks less innocent.I didn't even know Skipper was still made, I thought she was discontinued years ago, so you taught me something!
ReplyDeleteI always loved skipper...probably more than my Barbies! Thanks for bringing back those memories of me on the floor playing with Skipper and Barbie in their Barbie car!
ReplyDeleteI had one Skipper doll and I remember her so clearly. I'm always looking out on eBay for her!

That's my Skipper in the first pic! Dress and everything! With two older sisters who had Barbie and Midge, I got Skipper first. I always had to be the little sister! I also have the bendy one on the right in your third picture, and the chair she's sitting on, and the camp chair, oh such great memories!

ReplyDeleteWay back in caveman times, when TV was still mostly black and white, I lived and breathed a sitcom named The Farmer's Daughter (1963, plus about three years more). It starred the incredible Inger Stevens as Katy Holstrum, a young Minnesota woman who becomes the housekeeper for widowed Congressman Glen (played by wonderful William Windom) and his two young sons. I adored the beautiful, Swedish-accenty Ingrid! And if I couldn't be her, or if she couldn't be my mom, or my housekeeper, OR even just a nice lady my aunt and I would run into when we grocery shopped, I went for the next best thing. When Skipper was introduced in 1964, I "made her be" Katy Holstrum as a child back in the the Old Country! I sewed little, white smocks for her to wear over her dresses, because I thought it was the way to go, and even made a cottage bed out of the box she came, complete with feather mattresses (<-- tons of doubled-over Kleenex)! Of course, when I "talked" her, I could only do it in my head. I couldn't have my family hearing "Katy" do her ridiculous Swedish accent! LOL! Tack så mycket for bringing a fond, Skippery memory-moment back to me!
ReplyDeleteI will have to pass this on to my niece, she loved Skipper with Barbie! Great post!
ReplyDeleteI love Skipper, too - and I think I got my Skipper before I ever even had a Barbie. I found a redhead recently in a thrift store on half-price day, and I was thrilled!
ReplyDeleteAs always- lovin' Barbie Wednesday!
"Skipping" away.........

Great trip for me down memory lane. I have a Skipper.
ReplyDeleteLike Barbie she looks a lot different today. I have such a hard time getting around that.
Oh well -- I guess we all change over the years.

Thanks for the bit of history on Skipper. I really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteLindsey!
ReplyDeleteTalk about perfect timing! I just found my red velveteen Skipper coat yesterday in a box - do you know what the outfit was called??? Or how to research it?
Thanks!
Happy Thursday,
Sally
P.S. Waving hi to your mom! :)
Huh...I'm learning things I never knew about Barbie and friends. I'm one of those who never had a Barbie doll growing up...don't know why but no one ever bought me one. I think I was 14 when the little neighbor girl next door gave me one of her old ones...I think she felt sorry for me! Anyway...thanks for the info..it's interesting. Have a great weekend you two....Maura:)
ReplyDeleteI <3 Barbie! Is this a blog party? If it was I would join in! I really enjoy making Barbie clothes and even bought a new one recently as I lost mine from my childhood :(
ReplyDeleteI love my Batbie family! Great post!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for following my blog. I am so glad you found me because now I can follow you also. What a cute blog. I have had so much fun scrolling thru! I found this post on Skipper. I have not thought about her for years, I have a redheaded Skipper in my attic. My Mom got me Skipper when in fact everyone but me had a Ken and that's what I wanted. My Mom did not think it was appropriate to have a Ken! Oh cripes, she thought maybe they would do something bad! ha!
